IHSA Adds Lacrosse... Morton Players Honored
Hannah Grow and Sydney Cooper Receive Recognition in College LAX
Two MHS graduates who received Morton Lacrosse Club Scholarships are continuing the skills they honed in the Morton Lacrosse Club, and are also making a mark on the college LAX scene.
Hannah Grow received a 2013 Morton Lacrosse Club Scholarship. She has played for the Franklin College Grizzlies (Franklin, Ind), and this year garnered postseason honors in the All-Ohio River Women's Lacrosse Conference (ORWLC), through a vote among league coaches. She was among attacking position players earning first-team all-conference honors. Grow led the Grizzlies with 40 points and 72 shots during the 2016 season. She scored 28 goals and tallied 12 assists. Grow ranked second on the team by winning 34 draws.
Sydney Cooper received a 2014 Morton Lacrosse Club Scholarship, and plays for the Cornell College Rams. She has been named to the 2016 Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference All-Sportsmanship Team. This year's team is comprised of one player from each of the 10 institutions in the MWLC. A complete list of all postseason honorees can be found at 2016 All-MWLC Teams. Cooper led Cornell's second-year program in scoring for the second straight season. She tallied 26 goals and six assists in 15 matches. Cooper netted a school-record tying seven goals in an early non-conference tilt with Midland. She recorded a point in all but four matches this spring. Cooper also posted team-highs with 43 ground balls, 47 draw controls and 22 caused turnovers. She converted two free position goals. Cooper has started all 30 matches in her career, totaling 52 goals and 77 ground balls.
IHSA to add Lacrosse as Official High School Sport
IHSA Boys and Girls Lacrosse State Series will begin in Spring 2018. To date, local communities have had strong growth via club Lacrosse programs, but soon it will be an official IHSA sport.
“The addition of lacrosse builds on the IHSA mission of offering a wide range of participation opportunities for high school students in Illinois,” said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson. “The IHSA Board has been extremely diligent in evaluating lacrosse’s status as an IHSA sport over the past seven years, and based on the continued growth, felt the time was right to begin in the spring of 2018.” READ MORE about IHSA LAX.
